On September 2nd, 276 people were brought by the Libyan coast guard to Khoms (120 km east of Tripoli). They were then transferred to detention center where MSF works. Reportedly, they were in two rubber coats, one stopped due to engine failure, while the other boat continued to navigate for several hours before deflating and sinking. Survivors told MSF teams that over a hundred people died in the shipwreck.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://saracreta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/msf242882high.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Condemned to drown at sea or be locked up in Libya</image:title><image:caption>Mother and child in detention centre.
Her testimony: I’m 18 years old. I know I look tired and old. I’ve spend one year and half in Libya, that’s why. My son is 8 months now. I was lucky to give birth in a hospital: I was 9 months pregnant when I had a crisis and the people who kept me brought me to deliver in a clinic in Tripoli. My husband left to Algeria. Now it has been a long time since last time I called him. He doesn’t know whether I’m dead or alive. After we went to sea and were brought back to Libya, my son fell sick. He has fever in the night and cannot sleep. I’m also very tired. Can you find a way to help me?

His testimony: “On the boat there were many elderly, many women and children. Only some had the life jackets. Most of the people don’t know how to swim. Imagine you go to sea and you don’t know how to swim. They drowned straightaway. I remember the corps floating. There was also a Libyan family with us. They have lost their daughter [in the shipwreck].
After their disembarkation, MSF treated survivors with chemical burns from petrol spills. “We managed to treat 18 urgent cases - among them, nine persons suffering from extensive chemical burns (up to 75% of the body)” says Jai Defransciscis, MSF nurse in Misrata.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://saracreta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/msf242892high.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Condemned to drown at sea or be locked up in Libya</image:title><image:caption>A shipwreck survivor in detention centre, during consultation with MSF medical staff.

Survivors told MSF teams that over a hundred people died in the shipwreck.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://saracreta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/msf242909high.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Condemned to drown at sea or be locked up in Libya</image:title><image:caption>A shipwreck survivor in detention centre.

She lost her house during the fire in Kabubili settlement. “I had to walk 2 weeks to reach this settlement. I was suffering as I’m old, and we were walking all day and at night we were sleeping next to the road. Here we don’t have enough food and water and there is no work and nothing to do. On my shoulders I had my little sister. When I arrived here in Goma, the conflict was still going on. I was only 13 years old. I was living with my grandmother for a while, but she didn’t have the means to support me. Now I have to find my way on the streets, but I would like to continue my study and help my brothers. MSF helped me as I was very sick. My friends told me about the MSF service and I was lucky. But I’m still thinking about my future”. When Erik was referred to the hospital he had a seriously infected wound, and was diagnosed with sepsis.
